In this book, I have tried to bring past times to life so that readers
may form some idea of what it was like to be a member
of Rutgers Church throughout the years following its founding
in 1798. The story of a church community is more than
a recital of the names and dates of pastors and officers.
It is more than successive buildings that housed the congregation.
What I have attempted here (so far as extant material
allows) is to give some idea of how the congregation
functioned, what it was and did, and how it related to
the larger church and to its community. I have also tried
to place the Rutgers Church story in context with the
New York City story, so that, knowing where we have been,
we can better assess where we are and where we might be
going.
About the Author
Vera Mowry Roberts, Ph.D., is a long-term member of the Rutgers Presbyterian Church,
having joined the congregation in 1961. She has served
many terms as elder and as trustee. In addition, she was
the first woman ever to be elected Moderator of the Presbytery
of New York City in 1975 and has served that body in many
other leadership positions. She has twice been elected
Commissioner to General Assembly. As Distinguished Professor
of Theater at Hunter College and at the Graduate Center
of the City University of New York, she has published
three books and dozens of articles in the field of theater
history, and for the last ten years, she has edited a
scholarly journal on American theatre. This present volume, a
labor of love, is her chief contribution to the Bicentennial
Celebration of the Rutgers Presbyterian Church.
