Computer Classes
 September 13 - October 7, 2010

The Computer Classes at Rutgers are geared toward people of all ages and all levels, from children to seniors, from job seekers to people who are employed.

There are a maximum of 6 people in each class for more personal and effective instruction based on each student's ability and need.

All classes will be taught by Vyvette Altaras, who is a computer training specialist with a masters degree from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a 20-year career in computer software training and instructional design.

Please communicate directly with Diane Nicole with any class requests or if the time listed does not work for you. We are able to insert new classes provided we have four people registered. Advanced classes can be accommodated based on demand.

Registration Information Computer Classes:
  • All registration is on a first-come basis
  • Payments must be made to hold a spot
  • Small Classes (max. 6 people)
  • Class offerings can change due to registration and need
  • We must have a minimum number of 4 students for a class to take place
  • All persons age 55+ receive a 50% discount
Financial aid and payment plans available.
  • Please come to classes on time to avoid interruptions.
  • We now accept checks or credit cards
Private Classes
We provide private instruction, on anything you need to know about a computer.

COMPUTER CLASSES $180
Classes are usually 1 hr. 30 min. each and are run once a week for 6 weeks

MS Word Basics
A course for those with little to no word processing experience. Students will learn the basics of Microsoft Word including creating and formatting documents, bullets, lists, and templates using cut, copy, and paste techniques.

MS Word Beyond Basics
Learn how to create & format tables, using mail merge, and automatic formatting & styles, modify & create your own templates, and share your documents with comments & tracking features, and much more.

Photoshop Basics
Students will learn to create quality graphics and enhance images with Photoshop, the industry standard tool for manipulation and format conversions.

Organizing and Editing your photos on Picasa
Learn how to utilize the Google's free tool for the novice to intermediate image/picture editor. Picasa will perform many different edits, including: cropping, red-eye removal, color enhancement and white leveling. The class will also cover how to organize photographs using Picasa as well as posting them to web albums, or websites to share and/or back them up.

Basics Potpourri
A class for people who are not completely computer illiterate but need to find out about and practice the basics, will also touch upon email, internet, with other computer basics.

Internet Basics: (6 Sessions)
A course for those with little or no Internet experience that will cover basic aspects of the internet including providers, connections, browser functions, utilities, layout, browsing, navigating and searching for specific information.

File Mgmt & Saving:
This course will teach students about file types and back up methods, including documents, pictures, emails and other types of data files. Students will learn how to save and organize files, create folders, and burn files on flash drives or CDs.

E-mail Basics:
This is a course in which students will discover all the great uses of an Internet e-mail account using Google's GMail.

Children's Computer Class:
This course for children teaches typing MS Word, PowerPoint and Internet search techniques to accomplish their schoolwork.

E-mail Beyond BAsics:
Students who know how to send or receive emails, will learn how to insert attachments and open them, how to create distribution lists and organize email messages.

Web Page Development:
This course aims to introduce students to navigating and publishing on the internet. Students must be familiar with word processing & Internet, and have basic knowledge of Windows or Mac.

Social Networking Using Digital Media:
The class will cover online networking using various websites i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Linked etc. Students will be able to create accounts on desired sites and develop their profiles, upload pictures etc.

MS Excel Basics:
This course is designed to teach students how to create and manipulate a spreadsheet to record data, perform basic calculations, and create charts.

Brush Up Your Computer Skills
to compete in the Workforce:

This course is geared towards people who have a basic knowledge of computers and MS Office Applications but need to reinforce their skills to be eligible on the job market. MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook will be addressed.

Computer Beyond Basics:
A course designed for those with some computer experience in Organization, maintenance, saving (locally and externally), personalizing your computer, clean up and defragmenting will be covered.

How to Buy & Sell on eBay:
A class on how to buy anything and everything on eBay quickly, easily. Learn to communicate with sellers through email, pay for your items electronically, and protect yourself from fraud. For the seller, you will learn how to create titles that get noticed and how to craft advertising copy that sells items quickly. You'll also learn how to safely conduct financial transactions, how to accept credit card payments, and how to pack and ship any item hassle-free. Must have basic computer skills and be able to use a mouse and keyboard before registering for this class.

Odds N' Ends:
The topics of this course are selected by the students in order to target issues that come up in everyday use of the computer.

Google Class:
Learn how to utilize Googles features i.e. You Tube, Google, Shopping and more.

Computer Basics:
Ultimately designed to become familiar and comfortable with your computer, the class also teaches how to save and find information, create shortcuts, install new programs and customize your computer to fit your needs.

MS Power Point Basics:
This course will provide a thorough understanding of the presentation program PowerPoint. Students will learn to make a presentation by creating and editing slides, inserting clip art, applying designs, and working with views to ultimately run the slide show.

MS Excel Beyond Basics:
Learn to work with functions, range names and filtering, and formatting to quickly calculate and find information. Create subtotals, pivot tables to quickly analyze data, as well as simplify data entry in this class of Excel.

Digital Camera:
In this course, students will learn the basic uses of their digital camera, how to upload pictures onto the computer using Google's free software Picasa. Also covers basic picture editing techniques, internet photo sharing.

Store and Play Music
This class will introduce the students to ways of creating a music library on the PC's with I Tunes and Windows Media Player as well as using iPods and MP3's.

Using Your Scanner:
Learn the basic skills needed to scan photos and documents and save them.

Windos 7 for Vista
and XP Users:

The class will teach XP and Vista users the fundamentals of Windows 7 how to maintain and manipulate, save information and perform various system functions using the new operating system, including changes in MS Office 2007 in your computer.

Classes MUST be paid for before classes begin.
