Rutgers Child’s Play ...
is the unique family program that’s fun for babies, toddlers, and parents alike. Our playgroups feature singing, art projects, story time, active play, and more to engage children. Just as important, Child’s Play gives parents a chance to find community and support, so children are accompanied by parents or grandparents only (no nannies). Activities are facilitated by a group leader who is happy to exchange parenting stories, offer encouragement, and play alongside the kids. All playgroup leaders are parents who have attended Child’s Play with their own children and have years of experience working with children under the leadership of director Holly Nedelka. Our program is child-centered and developmentally appropriate for babies and toddlers—no activity is ever mandatory and children are free to move around and explore. Be prepared to have fun!
Class Descriptions
Baby Playgroup
Bring your baby 14 months old and under for an hour of relaxed, friendly conversation with new moms/dads and plenty of fun for baby. We sing songs, blow bubbles, read simple stories, and offer toys just right for your baby. Talk about sleep issues, teething, feeding, and the rest of your life too!
Toddler Playgroup
These groups include parents with toddlers as they become more active and take their first steps toward independent play. Each 90-minute session includes circle time, art, active play in our “indoor playground,” snack time, interactive story time, and more.
Preschooler On My Own Playgroup
This two-hour playgroup helps 2-3 ½ year olds gradually and gently transition to separation from mommy or daddy when and if they are ready. Parents may either stay with their children the entire session or exit when and if the child feels comfortable separating. While the group leader and an assistant lead the session, this playgroup is also an opportunity for children to engage in child-directed play that is imaginative, creative, and fun. We offer hands-on activities at our learning centers for the children to explore at their own pace, as well as circle time, art, stories, and active play.

Child’s Play Mandarin Program...
Mandarin program is designed for native Mandarin speakers and beginners. Lead teacher Jing Jing Ra creates our dynamic curriculum for children from 6 months to 9 years. Classes and playgroups are child-centered and activity-based. Join our immersion playgroups or classes to explore the Mandarin language, celebrations, and culture!
Mandarin Playgroups. Playgroups for our youngest children introduce Mandarin language and culture through nursery rhymes and exploring familiar objects, then progress to include age-appropriate craft projects, stories and movement as babies grow to toddlerhood. Adults attend and participate in our baby and toddler playgroups.
Baby Pandas (4-12 months)· Little Pandas Playgroup (12-24 months)
Mandarin Classes. Our program for young preschoolers and school-aged children is a drop-off program. Classes are filled with hands-on activities that introduce basic words and phrases. Children learn Chinese language and culture through music, movement, and crafts, and as they advance in their Mandarin learning, they engage in dramatic play, science, calligraphy, and group projects. Classes are small so students receive individual attention. Please note that the ages listed below are approximate; your child will be placed in a class that’s right for him or her based on level of experience with Mandarin as well as age.
Class Descriptions
On My Own Pandas Playgroup
(2-3½ year)
Our student-centered classes are filled with hands on activities to introduce basic Mandarin words and phrases. This class is for students of all backgrounds & levels of fluency.
Panda Buddies
(3-5 years)
This 90-minute class is appropriate for beginners, introducing children to basic words and phrases.
Panda Buddies 2
(5-7 years)
This 90-minute class is similar to Panda Buddies, but introduces more challenging activities such as dramatic play and calligraphy. Beginners and more experienced Mandarin-speakers will enjoy this class.
Panda Buddies 2 Intermediate (5-7 years)
This 90-minute class is for students who can understand Mandarin and have some speaking fluency. Students learn from songs, story, crafts, science, and movement. Special attention is given to cultural activities, word recognition and conversational fluency.
Panda Buddies 2 Advanced (5-7 yrs)
This 90-minute class is for students 5 to 7 years old who can speak Mandarin fluently. Students learn from songs, story, crafts, science, and movement. Special attention is given to cultural activities, writing, and pinyin (the phonetic system for Mandarin that uses the western alphabet).
Panda Buddies 3
(7-9 years)
This 90-minute class allows children to engage in more active dramatic play as well as introducing them to pinyin and expands their writing to include more challenging characters. Fun group projects and cultural activities are incorporated into the language-learning experience.

Two make-ups per term allowed, by prior arrangement with program coordinator, which must be taken during the same term as the missed classes.
